Downton Abbey is back again, and we couldn’t be happier to watch the glamorous British bunch for another season. Check out this behind-the-scenes look at some of the most stunning rooms featured on the series & how to get the look.

The saloon is one of the most architecturally grand rooms in Highclere Castle, where most of Downton Abbey is filmed. The gothic style decor is accented by wall covering panels made of leather that date back to 1631, but you can get a more modernized look with a deeply-hued damask wallpaper.

The study is where we often see Lord Grantham mulling over his estate’s future. The gorgeous wood panels and inset shelving are adorned with a vast collection of leatherbound books. If you want to recreate this look without installing ornate paneling, you can use a trompe l’oeil wallpaper that looks like bookshelves. Rich velvet and silk textures provide a softer contrast to the masculine room.

We saw the music room last season when the family held events, and we hope we can see more because those walls hung with 16^th century Italian embroideries are to die for! Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2015 is Marsala! Check out these four color pairings that will help you decorate with the hue like a pro.

 Turquoise lies on the opposite side of the color wheel from Marsala, which makes it a complementary hue to the Color of the Year. The two can be used equally throughout a room. Think turquoise walls with a marsala sofa and area rug, which is done so well in this living room.

Marsala lends itself well to the monochromatic color palette due to its subdued, rich and warm qualities. Rust and umber colors, both in matte and metallic versions, lend a spiciness to Marsala. “Anything that has the brown, coppery feel is obviously going to be a natural–it’s closely related to Marsala, but different enough.” says Lee Eiseman, Executive Director at Pantone Color Institute.

Thanks to Marsala’s strong brown undertones, it can actually play as a neutral. When used as an accent, it works well with a combination of many colors and prints. Choose a pattern containing all of the colors you’d like to use in your room (including marsala) and then reiterate those hues in other pieces.

Drapery is one of those decor elements that can really make a difference in a room. Check out these four window treatment ideas that will have your space looking renewed in no time!

For a dramatic, cohesive look, use different curtain panels on the walls of an entire room. This works best for rooms with at least one window on three of the walls. Use sheer curtain panels over the spots on the wall with windows and a solid color for areas without windows. This idea would be perfect for a fabulous room with lots of windows but a bad view or a space that is flooded too strongly with sunlight.

Mary McDonald, one of Bravo TV’s Million Dollar Decorators, certainly knows a thing or two about making a room look great. The award-winning interior designer gave us some exclusive tips on how to make your home beautiful. Check them out:

McDonald manages to make a very large room feel intimate by creating different sections of seating. She ties it together with the same shade of red throughout the entire space.

Tip: “First I start with a vibe–A goal ‘look’ we want to attain. Then I look at what the best floor plan is for the needs of the client as well as any construction changes that are necessary to reach our goal. After a floor plan is developed, I populate how to tie the tones, textures and hues together through case goods and textiles. There are lots of other little tangents in between but this is the basic order of things in the broadest form.”

This bedroom features so many details, and they all work together wonderfully. We like how the cornice on the bed and the window mimic each other, creating a cohesive look.

Tip: “I love a layered bedroom. Start with some sort of bed treatment and always have some sort of slipper chair by the bed for books. Add a bench/settee at the end of beds with pillows and throws and a wall montage of some little moment above the bed.”

Black is one of those colors that many of us love to use in our wardrobe, but don’t utilize it properly when decorating. Here, McDonald has made a room pop with the color in a variety of patterns.

Tip: “A couple of pieces of black furniture or accessories really go a long way. Black creates tonal punctuation in a room and is best used in a variety of material elements such as a lacquer coffee table, a pair of noir porcelain vases and a black marble box or metal sconces.”

What an inviting bathroom this is! The hues used in the space exemplfy our prediction that Renaissance-inspired color palettes will be all the rage this year. Here, McDonald accents the functional aspects of the bathroom with an Asian-inspired chair adorned with a chinoiserie print pillow and an ornate tabouret.

Tip: “Using too much chinoiserie in varying ways is busy and unsophisticated. Start by accenting one or two places. Then it will be the magical delight chinoiserie IS!”

This family room designed by Brian Patrick Flynn has just the right amount of playfulness. The red, white and blue color scheme tastefully riffs on the patriotic vibe while the pop art hanging over the hearth featuring LEGO® people offsets the motif.

Brian’s Tip: “Mixing patterns is one of the more complex elements of interior design. To pull it off, you’ll need a mix of prints ranging in scale–small, medium and large–and different types of prints. When different scale is used, you’ll avoid anything from becoming too busy or cluttered, and by diversifying shapes, you’ll strike the perfect balance of different lines. Here I used a medium plaid on the windows, a large scale houndstooth on the ottoman and a pinstripe on the chair upholstery.”

Björn Björnsson’s design in this bedroom proves that combining patterns can be subtle and soothing enough for a bedroom. The floral medallion print on the pillows counterbalance the stripes of the bench & Greek key-esque design on the window treatments.

Björn’s Tip: “Mixing prints can be difficult especially if you would like to maintain the elegance of a room.  Make it easy by choosing one dominant color, like the soft blue I used in this bedroom, and add small black accents. I did this on the window’s shades, the chaise & the floor to give the space that sophisticated master bedroom quality.”

We love how fresh and dynamic this room feels. “The space was actually in a lower level room that has no windows, so the object was to create color, interest and light by using patterns that enabled the space to feel bright,” explains designer Greg McKenzie.

Greg’s Tip: “Mixing patterns based on similar color values is a great way to create excitement. Use a common theme in the main colors to create a continuity that flows beautifully. Here, both the chevron striped pillows and the diamond pattern wallpaper contain orange and white while the pop of the turquoise adds balance.”

Grey really hit the scene in the summer of 2014. We were seeing the color in hazy, monochromatic styles featuring casual, solid materials.
