New York Cottages & Gardens and Kravet have teamed up again this year for Project Design 2014, where 44 top notch designers redecorated the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island for an excellent cause. Unlike most showhouses we cover, this one is special in that the freshly designed rooms in the house will be used by the families of children undergoing medical treatment at the Children’s Medical Center of New York.

We got an inside look at the gorgeous showhouse and spoke with the designers, who gave us exclusive tips on working with a budget, creating moods with color and more! Check them out:

Designers Anne and Gail of Tarasoff Interiors set out to create a room that was warm and comfortable for the families that stay there. They built the design concept around a fabric with an elephant motif, which is used as a window treatment and on pillows to create an African Safari-themed room. The headboards upholstered in chevron striped fabric echo the zebra striped area rug on the floor, while pops of orange warm up the grey and white color scheme.

Anne & Gail’s Tip: “If you don’t have extra padding in your budget for art, print photos that you’ve taken on vacation or at events and hang them on clipboards. In this room, we did just that with safari photos taken by a friend’s son–it’s an incredible look and an extremely affordable way of making a statement wall.”

“The renovation of Ronald McDonald House resonated with me for its permanence and mission” says Keith, whose design in calming blues, refreshing white, and warm mahogany is reminiscent of a ship’s stateroom docked at a port for a brief visit, implying that the stay there is only temporary and that outside there is hope at the end. Keith designed this room to “embrace [the families] like a warm hug.”

Keith’s Tip: “Avoid overdoing a themed room to the point that it looks obvious and unsophisticated. Carefully choose the pieces that fit with the theme, like I’ve done here with the mirrored port holes & nautical flags made fromthe same white linen as the roman shades.”

Robin Baron wanted her room to be a happy, fun and inviting place for the families that stay there, so she drew from color psychology to create this feeling. “I love the colors because green encourages healing and blue evokes a calm emotion. Together, in these specific hues, they help create the restorative environment I envisioned.” Baron used hand painted wallpaper from Fromental that features playful vines and butterflies on the walls, but you can get a similar look with Clarke & Clarke’s Botanica.

Robin’s Tip: “I played with pattern-on-pattern to help create the dramatic, fun look of this room. When using multiple prints be consistent with color and vary the scale by mixing larger patterns with small and medium patterns, then balancing them with solid and textured fabrics.”

Eddie Lee’s gym design, something that we don’t see often at showhouses, started with the carpet. He chose a grey striped pattern that would coordinate with the gym equipment (donated by Planet Fitness in their signature purple) and make the space seem larger. “The ceilings are low in this space, which is never a good thing, but especially in a gym where lighting is crucial,” explains Lee. “Most ceiling mount lights drop too far into the room, so I found low profile florescent tubes and had them mounted in a random pattern on the ceiling.” The effect is dynamic, and gives a great energy to the space.

Eddie’s Tip: “I like using walls of mirrors in all my projects (and especially in a gym!) since they instantly double the room’s visual size and give a crisp, modern feel.”

“My inspiration for my previous bedroom all came from the ‘Zebras’ wallpaper by Scalamandre,” says Allen. “I had been obsessed with it forever.” Because this particular wallpaper is large in scale and so bold, Allen opted to decorate the rest of the room with similar shades of brown, then accent with bursts of orange from his vintage Hermes boxes.

Sam’s Tip: Don’t be afraid of a statement-making wallpaper. A graphic wall covering is inspiring and adds major interest to the room, so build your desired color scheme around it.”

Christine Gentile and team created a super glamorous spot to do laundry for the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island Project Design Showhouse. “Our mission was to make this laundry room as functional and cheerful as possible,” explains Gentile, whose inspiration for the room stemmed from the playful wallpaper and its fun color palette.

Christine’s Tip: “Small spaces are instantly transformed with wallpaper that either adds color or texture. Make sure you use a wallpaper that is appropriate for the space, though. Many clients want to use grass cloth, but do not realize it is not meant for wet/damp areas.”

The walls of Alex Papachristidis’ study are actually upholstered in the same fabric as the drapery and settee, but you can get the same look with matching wallpaper & fabric. “My apartment explodes with pattern and color,” explains Papachristidis, “I believe the most important place in the world is your own home, so my personal space is a reflection of how I like to live and what I value.”

Alex’s Tip: “If you use a matching print on the walls and elsewhere in the room, it’s important to get the balance right. Solid or more subtle prints make the design feel fresh and modern, even when the main pattern is quite traditional.”

Designer Charlotte Moss, who blends her traditional sensibility with modern-day aesthetics, has been a staple in the industry for years, garnering attention from top shelter magazines & A-List clients. Check out these must-know tips we snagged from Charlotte on how to make traditional elements work in your home today:

Charlotte effortlessly mixes traditional with contemporary elements in this sitting area. The embroidered pattern on the drapery as well as the paisley and floral prints are more classic choices while her color combination of Kelly & lime green with a pop of hot pink makes the space feel fresh. “I usually go for mix and contrast, so if I use bolder colors, I’ll add a piece of mahogany furniture,” explains Moss.

Tip: “To create a traditional room that still looks current, use bold color, more contemporary art and edit the accessories–that is, fewer being better. What I think enlivens and enriches any traditional interior is the mix of antiques with new furniture.”

Charlotte believes it’s wise to “find your starting point and build on it,” like she did in this cozy bedroom. The canopy bed’s floral fabric is the focal point and statement-maker, so everything else in the room is carefully chosen to complement, not compete with that fabric. For example, the pastel bedding pulls from colors on the trim of the canopy fabric and the neutral colors of the modern textured walls and traditional table lamps blend together seamlessly to play as a canvas for the bolder elements.

Tip: “The bed is a pretty personal item, so in terms of choosing a canopy bed, I think you must be guided by your personal preferences. My over arching tip in design is to listen to yourself and trust your instinct. It generally never lets you down.”

The traditional drapery in this study really makes the room feel grand without overpowering it. Charlotte chose a fabric that had a softer color and clean pattern in order to keep the room feeling crisp, light and airy, opting to accent with pops of red in the floral chaise and leather-upholstered chair.

Tip: “When decorating with traditional drapery styles, don’t smother the window, the view and the light. Good quality fabrication is key. When in doubt, or on a restricted budget…go simple.”

Designer Sofia Joelsson let the view do the talking in this dining room. Because the ocean outside is such a prominent feature of the room she kept the walls a simple white and used solid & sheer fabrics that wouldn’t compete with it.

 Sofia’s Tip: “Glass is an amazing reflective surface that allows you to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding elements of the room as well as the reflection of a chandelier and the room’s natural sunlight.”

Designer Jack Ovadia designed a modern dining area fit for a small apartment with an open floor plan at the W Residences Downtown in NYC. The living area is right next to the dining table, so he expertly blended the two “rooms” by adding lots of plush pillows for seating near the gorgeous view. This gives guests other areas to sit and mingle before the meal or be comfortably seated for a large buffet dinner.

 Jack’s Tip: “In a dining area with an open floor plan, don’t use too many colors and coordinate them with all of the visible areas.”

Lauren’s pool house has an effortless look to it. The 16th-century Belgian pine ceiling beams and 17th-century French limestone mantel create a monochromatic look against the white walls, tile flooring and sofas. Pillows in a ticking stripe fabric as well as lamps made from 18th-century Chinese vessels add a small dose of color.

This bedroom from the Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse 2014 is one of our favorite looks from Ellie Cullman. Shimmering walls and luxe textures have us pining for a retreat of our own just like it.

Ellie’s Tip: “You never know where you’ll find inspiration, so be open to anything. The rose gold Cartier bangle that I wear every day inspired me to create the metallic palette of this sexy bedroom.”

The theme of this sophisticated home office/dressing room was influenced by the vintage fashion photographs from Paris that hang on the walls. Ellie complements the photos with an Andre Arbus-style desk and an embroidered cashmere throw in the style of Armand-Albert Rateau.

Ellie’s Tip: “If you’re working with tight space in your home office, position the desk to be perpendicular to the wall. This frees up valuable space for built-ins and allows two people to work at the desk.”

Ellie designed this bunk room for a client’s grandchildren at their vacation home in Palm Beach. She tastefully created a subtle nautical theme fit with porthole references in the bed rails and cabinet door woodwork, as well as with fish motif and striped pillows.

Ellie’s Tip: “Remember, “kids will be kids.” In order for their rooms to always look tidy, ensure an easy cleanup plan. In this room, I included deep drawers under the beds, closed cabinets and large bins so toys and clothes could be hastily put away and out of sight.”

Can you believe the holidays are almost here? We’ve got some great tips & ideas on how to prep your home, which will soon be bustling with guests!

Designer Eileen Kathryn Boyd got creative with this table setting by using bold interior fabrics for the place mat and napkins, which is a makes for major wow-factor in a neutral dining room. It’s a good way to experiment with interesting color and pattern combinations like vivid floral and animal prints. We also find Boyd’s use of cuff bracelets instead of napkin rings to be genius.

If your guest room needs a pick-me-up, drape a pretty fabric above the bed, like this space in Gwyneth Paltrow’s home. Extra seating can be both fashionable and functional–upholster small padded stools that are small enough to slide right underneath your coffee table. The Holiday House NYC is one of our favorite show houses! For the past few years it’s been held at the Academy Mansion in Manhattan, a stunning building that world-class designers redecorate, transforming the space into stuff that dreams are made of. We got a first look at this year’s house, which showcased gorgeous decor & apparent talent.

Check out these three breathtaking rooms from the show house:

Architect and interior designer Justin Shaulis transformed the fourth-floor ballroom into a sleek & modern room that focuses on statement artwork. Titled ‘Gallery Hopping in Miami’, the space was meant to transport attendees to Art Basel, an international art show held in Miami in December. “I ultimately wanted to create a space that elicits a response,” explains Justin. “My hope is that peoples’ shoulders relax upon crossing over the threshold into my room, that their breath comes easier, and that their soul is uplifted as they connect with each and every piece of art.”

Traditional libraries that have intricate wood details on the walls tend to be decorated with deep, rich colors, but the Lillian August team surprised us by lightening up the interior’s architecture with winter whites in an array of textures and colorful accessories. The room itself is a nod to the balance of nature and design, exemplified by the organic shapes in the room, of which the chandelier and console are standouts. To top it off, the designers have included a vibrant Willem de Kooning  painting that has never been on exhibit before!

Designer Louis Navarrete created a mysterious oasis on the Holiday House’s third-floor bedroom, entitled ‘Mischievous Night.’ The moody space is a theatrical interpretation of the curious and reflective nature of the artist’s spirit and a haven for daydreaming. The room’s magical color palette of midnight blue, gray, brown and white is meant to evoke a cloudy haze in the night’s sky while the chandelier by Warren Muller–whimsically comprised of a saw, chains, pirate booty, an anchor, and a propeller–is inspired by a shipwreck .

Matthew Patrick Smyth transformed this living room into an elegant space that speaks to the traditional spirit of the Academy Mansion while layering in mid-century modern elements, abstract art and unique collectibles. The space is decorated entirely in Schumacher fabrics to honor the manufacturer’s 125^th anniversary.

When Amy Lau stepped into this 100 year old room, she immediately envisioned the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles. She installed each of the panels on the wall with mirrors, which you can do at home or get a similar look by using a metallic silver wallpaper. We love how she features vivid red pomegranates in crystal bowls for the tablescape, which is an easy way to dress up your table for the holidays.

Speaking of fires…rusty red and goldenrod yellow, colors that are often found in a roaring blaze, can actually make you feel warmer. Color psychology has shown that people who feel cold prefer warm shades like red and yellow. We suggest using red as the base hue, accenting with yellows and varying between solids and patterns.
