New York’s most prestigious show house, Kips Bay, opened last week, and just in time to inspire us all with creative entertaining ideas! With Memorial Day already upon us to signal the start of summer, get ready to prepare your home for an influx of visitors.
In this colorful dining room, designer Mark D. Sikes kept things casual with rattan furniture and checked wallpaper, then added an uptown element with fine antiques. By including custom banquettes in the corners of the room, he provided extra seating for a crowded summer soiree.
Peter J. Sinnott IV designed this soothing bathroom with “style and substance” in mind, installing tile four feet up the wall so that high traffic areas could be wiped up quickly. The grasscloth-look wallpaper is actually vinyl, the intricately patterned floor hides minor messes, and even the speckled ceiling acts as camouflage for water spots.

Take a cue from Greener by Design: Provide guests with a quiet alfresco respite to read a book, make a phone call or just enjoy the fresh air. We may not all be able to include a soaking tub, but an outdoor rug is an easy way to section off a large space and create an inviting area.

When Suzana Whyte Monacella of McMillen, Inc. designed this space, she worried that it might be too feminine, so she made the headboard and all of the bedding reversible. When picking pillows for your guest room, try choosing a masculine texture like a faux bois for one side and a softer floral for the other.
