This family room designed by Brian Patrick Flynn has just the right amount of playfulness. The red, white and blue color scheme tastefully riffs on the patriotic vibe while the pop art hanging over the hearth featuring LEGO® people offsets the motif.
Brian’s Tip: “Mixing patterns is one of the more complex elements of interior design. To pull it off, you’ll need a mix of prints ranging in scale–small, medium and large–and different types of prints. When different scale is used, you’ll avoid anything from becoming too busy or cluttered, and by diversifying shapes, you’ll strike the perfect balance of different lines. Here I used a medium plaid on the windows, a large scale houndstooth on the ottoman and a pinstripe on the chair upholstery.”

Björn Björnsson’s design in this bedroom proves that combining patterns can be subtle and soothing enough for a bedroom. The floral medallion print on the pillows counterbalance the stripes of the bench & Greek key-esque design on the window treatments.
Björn’s Tip: “Mixing prints can be difficult especially if you would like to maintain the elegance of a room. Make it easy by choosing one dominant color, like the soft blue I used in this bedroom, and add small black accents. I did this on the window’s shades, the chaise & the floor to give the space that sophisticated master bedroom quality.”

We love how fresh and dynamic this room feels. “The space was actually in a lower level room that has no windows, so the object was to create color, interest and light by using patterns that enabled the space to feel bright,” explains designer Greg McKenzie.
Greg’s Tip: “Mixing patterns based on similar color values is a great way to create excitement. Use a common theme in the main colors to create a continuity that flows beautifully. Here, both the chevron striped pillows and the diamond pattern wallpaper contain orange and white while the pop of the turquoise adds balance.”
