The holidays will be here before you know it, which means you’ll probably be hosting a get-together or two. Wow your guests with these entertaining and dining room decorating tips from interior designers who are pros at throwing parties.
This charming eat-in dining area by Frank de Biasi is versatile enough to go from quiet morning breakfasts to casual evening dinner parties. The space is all about the details, from the vertically striped step arch cornice to the same drapery fabric being run horizontally in order to echo the rug’s stripes.
Frank’s Tip: “Make sure that flow from the kitchen works with how you lay out an eat-in dining area – specifics like this really pay off when you’re hosting a dinner. For a full renovation decorating project, start by accentuating the architectural elements, including the windows, then add a rug and choose other fabrics based on that.”

Designer Sofia Joelsson let the view do the talking in this dining room. Because the ocean outside is such a prominent feature of the room she kept the walls a simple white and used solid & sheer fabrics that wouldn’t compete with it.
Sofia’s Tip: “Glass is an amazing reflective surface that allows you to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding elements of the room as well as the reflection of a chandelier and the room’s natural sunlight.”

Designer Jack Ovadia designed a modern dining area fit for a small apartment with an open floor plan at the W Residences Downtown in NYC. The living area is right next to the dining table, so he expertly blended the two “rooms” by adding lots of plush pillows for seating near the gorgeous view. This gives guests other areas to sit and mingle before the meal or be comfortably seated for a large buffet dinner.
Jack’s Tip: “In a dining area with an open floor plan, don’t use too many colors and coordinate them with all of the visible areas.”

This dining room by Sean MFK Bruns & Judy Hadlock uses several smaller tables instead of one large one, which is a new way to arrange seating for your holiday guests. We love the bubble chandeliers and metallic details in the table settings.
Mecox’s Tip: “Having a unique wine cellar, refrigerator or rack in the dining room affords the host the luxury of being able to pull out that special bottle whenever needed, plus it offers something visually interesting to look at while dining.”
